Artist note
My practice explores themes around the gendered experience with a focus on femininity and masculinity as gendered traits. Through deep research and a sociological approach my work explores the self and identity.
My fascination lies within questioning gender specific societal norms and challenging traditional and outdated views of gender. My work is continuously evolving and is informed by my personal experience, historical research and through interviewing specific demographics to help gage a sociological understanding of how gender is viewed or challenged within mainstream society in Britain. My practice takes on the forms of moving image, text, spoken word and photography.
And Then It Was Over
(Old synopsis)
As the year, 2020, comes to a close and the world still [seemingly] not getting any better I thought I'd reflect on the year that seemed to have got away from us and yet has felt like an entire decade in just twelve months. We have been met with an overwhelming sense of pain, uncertainty and stress. To counter these isolating feelings I wanted to reflect, focusing on some of the good times and sweet memories I have had in the past year. It's often hard to focus on the positive when we're constantly met with negativity and hard times, especially this year. So hopefully, through images locked in time, these little stories give you a little giggle. Always trying to find the light even when it doesn't feel like there is any.
This three part mini series begins with the first lockdown back in March 2020 trying to adjust, find humour and peace in a whirlwind of a change to our lives. The second in the series focuses on the end of a significant period of my life, my university experience. The third and final chapter focuses on my return to the island that I grew up on and the drastic difference, at the time, in how severely the coronavirus impacted our everyday lives.
